This page is being revised to reflect the revised sequence taught in the current Spelfabet Workbooks. Sorry this is a process, not an event!

Here are some example Individual Learning Plan goals which explicitly and systematically target awareness of sounds in words (phonemic awareness) and spelling pattern (graphemic) and word part (morphemic) knowledge.

The sequence used is from the Spelfabet materials (starting with early-developing speech sounds) but if you’re teaching a different sequence (e.g. the Letters and Sounds or Carnine sequence) please adapt accordingly. You probably also need to add goals targeting vocabulary, comprehension and fluency, working with texts containing the sounds and spellings your student knows.

In the following, C = consonant sound, V = vowel sound, so CVC means a three-sound (but not necessarily a three-letter) word. The goals are in three broad categories:

This page is a work in progress, and not intended to be exhaustive, just to give you ideas for ILP goals beyond high-frequency words.

(Learner name) will be able to correctly answer the following concept questions, and provide examples where some are given in brackets):
  • When we talk, what are our words made out of? (sounds)
  • Sounds are invisible, so we can’t draw them, so how do we write them down? (with letters).
  • Can you write a sound with one letter? (yes) What about two letters? (yes, e.g. ck, sh, ng). What about three letters? (yes, e.g. dge, tch).
  • Can some sounds have two or three spellings? (yes, e.g. c, k, ck or j, dge).
  • Are some spellings mainly for word beginnings? (yes e.g. w, h, y)
  • Are some spellings mainly for word endings? (yes e.g. ck, ll)
  • To read a new word, do you look at the first letter and have a guess? (no) Do you say the sounds for the letters and listen for the word? (yes)
  • To spell a new word, do you say it quickly and then see if you can find it on the wall? (no) Do you say it slowly, listen for the sounds and then write their letters or spellings? (yes)
  • Do you have to keep sounding out every word for your whole life? (no) Will you be able to just remember words after you’ve read/written them a lot? (yes)

Optional, for older and more able students who are aware that the system is very complex:
