I don’t usually like to work from grapheme to phoneme but I’ve noticed that I can get teachers’ attention by showing them a snapshot of the main spelling patterns of English. So here’s a little poster you can use to make this point to anyone who thinks English spelling patterns are either pretty simple or nonexistent, to convince them our spelling system is complicated but not incomprehensible.
Click here if you also want a free booklet of wordlists organised so that you can:
- Look up a sound and find all its main spellings, plus some of the unusual ones (front index)
- Look up a spelling and find the main sounds, along with a bit of etymological information (back index).
