Description
Download and print this deck of child-sized (5 X 6.5cm) playing cards for fun reading practice. Contain one-syllable words which contrast the vowels “i” as in “sit” with “i…e” as in “site”. Learners must read all letters carefully so they don’t mix up pairs like tap-tape, spin-spine and twin-twine. Words are printed facing in two directions so they can be read from either side of a table.
As well as these vowels, sound-letter relationships in this deck are as follows:
- b as in but
- c as in can
- d as in dog
- f as in fun
- g as in got
- h as in hat
- j as in jam
- k as in kid
- l as in let
- m as in man
- n as in not
- p as in pat
- r as in run
- s as in sit
- t as in top
- w as in win
- sh as in shop
- wh as in whip
- qu as in quit
These cards can be used to play any game that requires a typical deck of playing cards, with words on cards read aloud as each card is played. We’ve made some videos of example games to get you started:
- California Speed
- Spit
- Snip Snap Snorum
- War
- Beggar Thy Neighbour
- Slapjack
- Snap
- Mancala, for which you’ll also need to download our Mancala board.
We hope you enjoy using them!
