This test is designed to help you work out whether a learner can use the most basic English spellings, in words with three sounds only, and checked or “short” vowels.

All you need is a pen or pencil and a piece of paper.

When you’re finished, there is a link to the answer key below.

If your learner is making a lot of mistakes, it includes links to relevant wordlists they might like to practice, and this site’s shop also contains a workbook which targets all these patterns.

Hi Alison, thanks so much for providing such a fabulous resource! I am having a problem seeing the video link on the level test pages:
    https://www.spelfabet.com.au/phonics-resources/10-assessments/tests/level-1-test/

I can see the link to the answer key, but there is nothing to click on to do the actual test. The same goes for the level 2 test.

Am I missing something? Where can I find the link to the test please?

      Hi Paula

Sorry the tests link is not working, I’ll fix it. All the tests are in this youtube playlist:

I am hoping to update them soon but time keeps getting away from me. Alison
