Download and print this free deck of child-sized (5 X 6.5cm) playing cards for fun reading practice. Cards contain simply-spelt two-sound (VC) and three-sound (CVC) words printed facing both up and down, so they can be read from either side of a table.
Phoneme-grapheme correspondences in this deck are as follows:
- a as in at
- b as in big
- c as in can
- g as in got
- h as in hat
- i as in him
- m as in man
- n as in not
- o as in on
- p as in pat
- s as in sit
- t as in top
These are the first sound-spelling relationships taught in the Sounds-Write teaching sequence, and in the early Dandelion/Phonic Books and Forward With Phonics/Drop In Series teaching materials.
These cards can be used to play any card game that uses a typical deck of playing cards. We’ve made some videos of example games to get you started:
