School holiday literacy intensives

During school holidays we offer 3-5 sessions of intensive intervention plus homework and a report for children needing extra help learning to read and spell. Our next holiday intensives will run between 7th and 18th July 2025. When possible, we try to group young children (Years F-2) with similar skills, needs and availability, to make these sessions more affordable and fun.

We use systematic synthetic/linguistic phonics to develop phonemic awareness and sound-spelling knowledge, and lots of spelling/reading practice to get words into long-term memory. Word-building using common suffixes, and polysyllable words, are introduced at an early stage.

With older students, we work on writing sentences, paragraphs and longer texts, explicitly developing their confidence as writers. Reluctant readers and those with narrow reading interests (e.g. will only read about space travel, princesses, dragons or sport) can usually find decodable or hi-lo books they like and can read in our large library of specialised texts.

The cost of a holiday intensive depends on how much assessment we need to do, the number of sessions, whether these are individualised or in a pair/group, and how much detail is required in the report. Our fees are consistent with the NDIS recommended rate for therapists. Private health insurance rebates may apply, and if you have a referral from your GP you may be able to claim a Medicare rebate.
