12 download-and-print word-building card games in which players add one or more prefixes/suffixes to base words, and then spell the resulting words, adjusting junctures as necessary:

  • Doubling final consonant e.g. run-runner
  • Dropping final ‘e’ e.g. hope-hoping
  • Swapping ‘y’ for ‘i’ e.g. easy-easier
  • Assimilating prefixes e.g. in+possible = impossible

Download-and-print word-building card games requiring players to add prefixes and/or suffixes to base words, adjusting junctures as necessary:

  • Assimilating prefixes e.g. in+possible = impossible

Here’s a demonstration of the simplest game, which also includes the non-productive suffix -le, which is part of many words, even though we no longer use it to create new words:

The other suffixes in these games are -er, -y, s/es, -ify, -less, -ness, -ful, -ly, -able/ible, ity.

The prefixes are un-, mis-, dis-, de-, re-, pre- and assimilated/chameleon prefix in-/im-/il/ir.
