Download and print these 10 decks of child-sized 4.5 X 6.5cm phonics playing cards. Cards are printed with words containing common one-letter vowel spellings which mostly occur in polysyllable words: a/apron, e/evil, i/item, o/open, u/unit, u/tofu, y/very, er/alert, i/taxi, o/mother, y/reply.

Use these cards for any game requiring a standard deck of playing cards, such as War, California Speed or Spit. When playing a card, a player must read the word on it. Adults should help learners read accurately, prompt for rereading of misread words, and provide any missing sounds.

Between games, have a quick, 5-word spelling quiz with a random sample of words from the cards.
