This 53-page booklet is designed to help learners organise their thinking about the different ways each of the sounds of spoken English are spelt.
Most sounds have one page each, but a few sounds with many spelling alternatives have two pages. Up to three example words are given for each spelling, after which there is space for learners to write words they know which follow the same spelling pattern.
This booklet aims to help convince students who think English spelling is random and baffling that it is actually reasonably finite and learnable, and to help them learn how the system works by demonstrating it, rather than giving them a lot of complicated explanations.
