This free download-and-print Go Fish card game requires players to collect and write pairs of prefixed/suffixed words which share a base word. Use them to teach about word morphology early in a phonics sequence. Click here for a video showing you how to play.

In this version of Go Fish, players write pairs of words, instead of collecting sets of four cards. The winner is the player with the most word pairs on their list once the cards run out.

This deck of cards prints on three A4 sheets of light cardboard. The cards are children’s-hand-size (5.7 x 4cm). For larger cards, print/copy at 141% onto A3 cardboard.

The phonics targets in this set are dge/bridge, ve/give, le/little and words which end with ‘ic’ which changes to ‘ick’ when, for example, ‘picnic’ becomes ‘picnicking’:

The prefixes in this deck are: a- be- dis- for- im- mis- out- re- un-.

The suffixes are: -al -ate -ed -en -ent -er -es -est -ie -ify -ing -ist -ity -ly -ment -ness -s -y.

All the base words in this game are real English words. These are easier for beginners than word roots from source languages that they don’t know, like ‘aud’, ‘struct’ and ‘vis’.

Some words have more than one possible spelling, and both spellings of ‘judgement/judgment’ are included in this set.
