Description

Free sample of the download-and-print book “Not a Tutu” by Australian author and illustrator Gaia Dovey. This book completes the Phonics with Feeling Extended Code Set Three. Up to 5 copies may be printed.

Set Three assumes students have been taught the Initial Code (one-letter consonants and ‘short’ vowels, plus consonant digraphs like ‘ss’, ‘sh’ and ‘ck’) and ‘e-controlled’ vowel spellings in ‘make’, ‘these’, ‘like’, ‘chose’, ‘cute’ and ‘brute, and are learning about one-letter ‘long’ vowels in two-syllable words like ‘making’, ‘being’, ‘liking’, ‘chosen’, ‘cuter’ and ‘brutal’.

“Not a Tutu” is a story about Lucy whose beloved grandpa regularly picks her up from school, and notices her interest in a costume shop window. He doesn’t realise that the costume she loves is a gorilla suit, not a tutu. On her birthday, Lucy is jubilant to get judo lessons from an aunt, and flippers and goggles from her mum, but deflated by a tutu from her grandpa.

She tells her mum that a gorilla suit would be fun, but what she really wants is a wet suit.

Not wanting to be rude, Lucy and her mum discuss whether to tell her grandpa the truth. Lucy discovers her grandpa was a champion swimmer, and that probably giving her what she wants, and sharing his love of swimming with her, will make him happy. So she embarks on the difficult conversation with him.All the Phonics With Feeling books contain cohesive narratives, entertaining plots, engaging characters, and themes worth talking about. Containing more words than most decodable books (394 words in this case), they offer intensive decoding practice.

This book is suitable for children in Year 1 or 2, or slightly older catch-up learners. It is supplied with a printable quiz, or you can use the online Wordwall quiz here.
