These six download-and-print Phonics With Feeling readers are suitable for students in late Year 1 or Year 2, or slightly older catch-up learners. The Set Ten readers review spellings from previous levels and introduce new ones:

Description

The first two of these six download-and-print Phonics With Feeling readers revisit spellings for the ‘r-controlled’ vowel sounds /or/ and /ur/, and introduce the remaining spellings for those sounds. Book 3 introduces ‘r’ as in our, fire, and pure. Books 4 to 6 introduce extra spellings for the ‘short’ vowel sounds /o/, /u/, and /i/.

The Set Ten readers introduce new spellings for vowel sounds introduced in previous sets:

  • Revising a as in all, or as in for, ore as in more, aw as in saw; introducing au as in cause, augh as in caught, ar as in war, our as in four, oor as in door, ough as in bought, oar as in board, al as in walk.
  • Revising ur as in turn, er as in her, ir as in bird; introducing ear as in search, or as in word, our as in courtesy.
  • Introducing r as in our, fire, and pure.
  • Introducing the a as in want, au as in vault and ou as in trough spellings for the ‘short’ /o/ sound.
  • Revising u as in cup, o as in mother, and introducing the ou as in country and oo as in blood spellings for the ‘short’ /u/ sound.
  • Introducing the y as in cygnet spelling for the ‘short’ /i/ sound.

  • Walter is afraid of water, until he learns, by accident, that there is nothing to fear.

Dozens of Cousins (243 words)

  • u, o, ou, oo
  • Douglas has dozens of cousins, some of whom are well-behaved, and others who get up to mischief.

y as in cygnet (990 words)

  • y sounds like ‘short’ /i/ (usually words from Ancient Greek)
  • This book gives definitions of fourteen words in which the short i sound is spelled with y.
