Description

These five download-and-print Phonics with Feeling readers provide a review of the key elements of the Initial Code. The purchaser may print up to five copies of each book (i.e. 40c per print ex GST, since Book 3 is available as a free sample). A printable quiz for each book is included, or use the Wordwall quizzes online.

The books are suitable for students in the final weeks of their first school year, in Year 1, or slightly older catch-up learners. They can be used with the Spelfabet Level 2 teaching sequence, downloadable Workbooks, word-building sequences, the later decks of these phonics playing cards, and/or the printed short vowels wordbuilding game.

Tom and Oz (115 words)

• focuses on ‘o’ as on dog
• ss, ck, th (as in the)
• third person suffix ‘-s’ as in hops and jogs

Fat Cat (146 words)

• focuses on ‘a’ as in cat
• ll, sh, ch, tch
• plural suffix ‘-s’ as in cats
• possessive ‘s as in Sam’s

Ben, Jen, and the Hens (167 words)

• focuses on ‘e’ as in hen
• ng as in bang, ‘n’ as in plank
• third-person present verb suffix ‘-es’ as in fetches
• two-syllable words

Gus and Muff (201 words)

• focuses on ‘u’ as in fun
• ff, zz, th (as in thump)
• past tense ‘-ed’ sounds like ‘t’ or ‘d’
• suffix -ing
• contraction ‘it’s’ from ‘it is’
• reported speech

Milly and Jim (343 words)

• focuses on ‘i’ as in sit
• wh as in what
• past tense ‘-ed’ as in skidded
• plural suffix ‘-es’ as in stitches
• y and er ending in two-syllable words
• le as in little

‘Tricky’ words included: a, the, go, going, goes, no, he, she, we, be, to, do, too, of, I, my, you, her, they, have, give, was, want, come, are, ask, what, say, says, their, for, see, mother, father, good, make, don’t.

Punctuation used: full stop, comma, dash, exclamation mark, question mark, quotation marks, apostrophe indicating possession (Ben’s).
