Hi Alison,
I’m sorry but I’m not sure how to use these lists as a means for teaching spelling- do they reflect the words in your levelled workbooks?
Jude
They do, more or less, but the way I personally mostly use them is as a reference for activities e.g. if I am sorting all the different ways to spell “ay”, I look that sound up and find lists of words with all the different spellings, and write the ones that the learner is likely to know and use out on slips of paper, and ask her/him to sort them. If I am looking at overlaps and wanting a learner to know there are four different sounds associated with the letter “y” as a single grapheme, I can look lists of these up under “sorted by spelling” and create lists of words containing y as in yes, y as in my, y as in baby and y as in gym. And finally if a kid says to me “why is there a b in the word thumb?” i can google “spelfabet mb as in thumb” and (usually) voila! I have a list of words with mb as in thumb: comb, tomb, plumber, limb, lamb etc. So I can establish this as a word/syllable-final spelling alternative for the sound “m”.
