Description

This kit aims to equip you to teach early blending, segmenting, phoneme manipulation, the alphabetic principle and basic letter-sound relationships to beginning or struggling readers/spellers of any age.

The kit adheres to systematic, synthetic/linguistic phonics principles, following this teaching sequence (which is the same as the Sounds-Write program Units 1-10):

The Level 1 kit contains the following download-and-print materials:

Use this kit to get four or five-year-olds off to a good reading/spelling start, help older children catch up, or help a teenager or adult with little or no reading/spelling skills learn the basics.

The Spelfabet Embedded Picture Mnemonics aren’t part of this kit, as they’re not suitable for all ages. However, they’re suitable for young children, helping them link sounds and letters, so you might like to add them to your kit. Here’s a video showing one way to use the flashcard size.

Decodable books for reading practice with the same teaching sequence as this kit include:

Many other decodable books can also be used to practice the patterns taught in this kit, even though their teaching sequence might be slightly different. Check before use that they contain the sound-spelling relationships you’ve taught, and none or very few you haven’t taught yet.

A review of early literacy iPad apps that are consistent with the teaching approach in this kit can be found here.

We hope you find this kit affordable and easy to use, and that it helps your learner(s) quickly develop phonemic awareness and early reading and spelling skills.
