Download and print these 12 decks of child-sized 4.5 X 6.5cm phonics playing cards. Cards are printed with words contrasting the vowel sounds and spellings in ‘tap/tape’, ‘met/meet/mete’, ‘fin/fine’, ‘hop/hope’ and ‘us/use’, firstly in one-syllable then two-syllable words. Two additional decks target ‘c’ as in ‘cell’/’ce’ as in ‘dance’, and ‘g’ as in ‘gem’/’ge’ as in ‘hinge’.

Use these cards for any game requiring a standard deck of playing cards, such as War, California Speed or Spit. When playing a card, the player must read the word on it. Adults should help learners read accurately, prompt for rereading if a word is misread, and provide any missing sounds.
