Download and print these 12 decks of child-sized 4.5 X 6.5cm phonics playing cards. Cards are printed with one and two-syllable words which firstly revise patterns from previous sets, then target up to five spellings of a vowel sound:

  3. wh/when, le/apple, dge/bridge, ve/have
  4. three and four-syllable words with basic spellings
  5. er/ever and y/very

Use these cards for any game requiring a standard deck of playing cards, such as War, California Speed or Spit. When playing a card, a player must read the word on it. Adults should help learners read accurately, prompt for rereading of misread words, and provide any missing sounds.

Between games, have a quick, 5-word spelling quiz with a random sample of words from the cards.
