Download and print these 10 decks of child-sized 4.5 X 6.5cm phonics playing cards. Each card is printed with a word of up to three syllables. Each deck targets one vowel sound at a time (but two sounds in deck 5), and includes multiple spellings of that sound:

1. a/make, a/apron, ai/rain, ay/say, ey/they, ea/break
2. ee/see, ea/sea, e/me, e/these, y/silly, ie/chief, ei/seize
3. o/home, o/open, oa/boat, ow/slow, oe/toe

Use these cards for any game requiring a standard deck of playing cards, such as War, California Speed or Spit. When playing a card, a player must read the word on it. Adults should help learners read accurately, prompt for rereading of misread words, and provide any missing sounds.
